Intro The Freechild Project believes that young people are seeking to make change in their communities around the world right now, and are often left lurching about for money to fund their action. A growing number of funders are realizing that young people are not simply "the future." They realize that young activists are making significant and meaningful change in their communities today. Included here is a long list of those organizations, created to make funding money for action easier for young people to obtain. Click the following title for bookmarks on this page; otherwise, just scroll down. The Captain Planet Foundation Accepting proposals for grants, which supports projects that organize children and youths to find solutions to environmental problems in their communities. Grants generally range from $250 to $2,500. Schools and nonprofit organizations that organize local environmental programs involving children and youths ages 6 through 18 are encouraged to apply. Draper Richards Foundation The Draper Richards Foundation provides selected social entrepreneurs with funding of $100,000 a year for three years. The funds are specifically and solely for entrepreneurs starting new nonprofit organizations. The foundation awards only four fellowships a year and, like a venture capital fund, offers strategic and organizational assistance in addition to financial support. The projects selected by the foundation will demonstrate innovative ways to solve existing social problems. Echoing Green Foundation Echoing Green's mission is to spark social change by identifying, investing and supporting the world's most exceptional emerging leaders and the organizations they launch. Through a two-year fellowship program, we help our network of visionaries develop new solutions to society’s most difficult problems. These social entrepreneurs and their organizations work to close deeply-rooted social, economic and political inequities to ensure equal access and to help all individuals reach his/her potential. Ellen Dougherty Activist Fund Provides grants of up to $2000 to women 19 and under who propose to develop and lead projects focused on activism and social change. The application deadlines are February 15 and August 15 of each year. European Commission YOUTH Programme Offers financial support to young people, ages 15 to 25, who are members of the European Union and who have a project idea that they'd like to implement in their community. In addition to financial support, the programme provides information, training and opportunities for young people to develop partnerships and networking opportunities with organizations in other EU countries. The Foundation Center - Finding Funders Search by name for addresses, Web sites, basic financial information, and more on 67,000 private and community foundations in the U.S. The Foundation for Young Australians Grants of up to $10,000 (AU) to young people with project ideas that are considered to benefit the Australian community through the findings or achievements of the person conducting the project. Funders’ Collaborative on Youth Organizing (FCYO) A collective of national, regional and local grantmakers dedicated to advancing youth organizing as a strategy for youth development and social justice. Our mission is to substantially increase philanthropic investment in and strengthen the organizational capacities of youth organizing groups across the country. Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues, based in New York City, is a national association of grantmakers committed to increasing resources for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities and to advancing a human rights and social justice agenda within the field of philanthropy. We work to increase the philanthropic community's knowledge, understanding and support of critical funding needs in the LGBT communities. Fundraising Action Training A weekend-long training that explores the basics of grassroots fundraising including asking for money, writing letters, and developing an annual plan. Fee is $200. Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training (GIFT) Develops and strengthens the grassroots fundraising skills of people working for social justice. Created primarily for groups and people of color, the goal of GIFT is to build the capacity of progressive organizations to raise money and to increase the number of people of color in fundraising. GrantStation Quickly and easily links nonprofits to all current sources of grant money, while also teaching these organizations how to secure available funding. Developed and tested by fundraising professionals, it is the only tool on the market that is based on in-depth and ongoing research. Hazen Foundation A private, independent foundation that seeks to assist young people, particularly minorities and those disadvantaged by poverty, to achieve their full potential as individuals and as active participants in a democratic society. International Youth Foundation An international network of children and youth foundations and organizations working together for positive youth development on a global scale but each deeply rooted in helping to solve youth problems in their own country. This network, at the heart of IYF's mission, is currently made up of 37 partner organizations in 45 countries. The National Organizers Alliance NOA’s mission is to advance progressive organizing for social, economic and environmental justice and to sustain, support and nurture the people of all ages who do it. New Voices A national program to help nonprofit organizations bring innovative new talent to their staffs. Its Fellowship Program awards salary-support grants to small nonprofits demonstrating a commitment to cultivating and strengthening the leadership potential of "new voices." Resist A national foundation that funds small budget groups who struggle towards a broad vision of social justice, while continuing to oppose political and institutional oppression. Resist formed in 1967 to oppose the war in Vietnam and to support draft resistance. Resist remains a political organization committed to radical social change. Their grants start at $500 and go up to a maximum of $2000. Resist also publishes a popular pamphlet, (the full text is available on the Internet). Third Wave Foundation Offers financial support in the form of grants, technical assistance in the form of trainings, workshops, and connections with experts, as well as networking opportunities for young leaders to meet and collaborate with one another to build a larger movement. Youth Noise Youth Noise offers grants up to $1,000 to support youth-led projects designed to improve members' communities or schools. Youth Servce America Regularly offers new awards and grants for youth to conduct service learning projects focused on a variety of topics. Just Do Something, the Citizens Connection If you live in the UK and you're making a difference in your school or community, apply for a Deutsche Bank Spotlight Award. You could win a £1,000 voucher for computer equipment or other prizes to help further your cause. Applicants must be between the ages of 11 and 18. Youth Venture Youth Venture believes young people ages 12 to 20 have the creativity and the energy to launch and lead their own ventures that bring about positive change to their schools and neighborhoods. They offer funds to support teams in local communities across the U.S. YouthActionNet This link is to a nice page of information about fundraising, including how-to's and more. YouthActionNet, a project of the International Youth Foundation, will support 18- to 24-year-olds. Projects must have clear goals and potential for growth and replication. Youth Servce America Regularly offers new awards and grants for youth to conduct service learning projects focused on a variety of topics. Mix It Up Grants The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Study Circles Resource Center are accepting applications for this program. Grants of up to $250 will be made to support youth-directed projects that focus on identifying, crossing and challenging social boundaries in schools and communities. Applicants should demonstrate youth leadership, collaborative community efforts and the potential for sustainable work. Individuals proposing youth-directed school or community projects are encouraged to apply. The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) Grants for research on civic engagement by young Americans. ChangeAmerica Foundation The ChangeAmerica Foundation is a non-profit foundation devoted to youth and student organizations and their causes, through fundraising and media awareness. Swackhamer Peace Essay Contest The contest is open to all high school students throughout the world. The topic: How would a Peace Education course in your school benefit students, the school, the community and the world? What lessons and issues do you think should be included in such a course? Brower Youth Awards The annual Brower Youth Awards honor six young people for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and social justice advocacy. Each winner is awarded $3000 and brought to San Francisco for the award week and a backcountry camping trip. Youth in Action Awards 15 individuals (10 from US and 5 international) between the ages of 13-30, are given $1,000 awards for their youth-initiated projects. The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes Awards $2000 to young people from diverse backgrounds who have organized and led an extraordinary service activity to benefit other people, animals or the planet. Ask an adult who is not related to you and has solid knowledge of your project to nominate you. Nominees must be between the ages of 8 and 18. Do Something - Brick Awards Founded in 1996, the Do Something BRICK Awards honor America's top leaders age 18 and under in the areas of community building, health, and the environment. Each award includes a $5,000 higher education scholarship, a $5,000 grant for continued community work, pro bono services, and other support and recognition. Winners are announced and honored at the annual star-studded BRICK Awards Gala in New York City. The State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Award The award is now available to teachers and youth (ages 5-25) to implement service-learning projects on National Youth Service Day 2003, April 11-13th. National Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world, mobilizes youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through service, recruits the next generation of volunteers, and educates the public about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders. Fifty grants of $500 are available to youth and fifty grants of $1,500 are available to teachers (to engage classes). Commercial Alert's National Ad Slam Contest The Ad Slam is a nationwide contest to throw advertisers out of schools during the 2001-2 school year. Commercial Alert will award a $5,000 prize to the school that makes the best and most creative effort to remove advertising and commercialism from school premises. Other prizes will be given for creativity, media coverage, and teamwork. If you want to participate, please e-mail us your name, address, and the name of your school.
